Probiotics for dog ear problems

Can probiotics help my dog's Yeast infections and ear problems?

How to know if your dog has a yeast infection.

Yeast infections and ear problems can cause your dog untold pain and discomfort.  If your dog's ear problems are caused by an overgrowth of yeast, probiotics are the first step to eliminating yeast and helping her body repair naturally.  Symptoms of a yeast infection in the ears include:

  • Wax buildup in the ears red, brown or yellow thick discharge, strong yeasty odor (healthy ears should be pink and shiny with no excess wax or smell.)
  • Scratching and itching at the ears as your dog tries to relieve the intense irritation.
  • Smelly foul odor.
  • Rubbing ears on floor or furniture, walking with head tilted, loss of balance in extreme cases.

Causes of yeast infection in dogs

Some breeds for example, Cocker Spaniels and Basset Hounds are more prone to yeast issues because of the structure of the heavy ear leather which closes off the ear canal and doesn't allow air to circulate.  That warm moist environment is perfect for yeast overgrowth, especially if water gets in the ear canal it's not long before your dog could have a raging yeast infection.  Other risk factors include:

  • Food allergies, it's important to eliminate grain from your yeasty dogs diet.
  • Hot humid weather can be a factor.
  • Using products to clean the ears that alter the PH or increase humidity and moisture.
  • Water entering the ear canal during bathing or swimming.
  • Antibiotic use.
  • Poor immune health.

Be careful with DIY's like vinegar for your dog's ear problems.

While apple cider vinegar can be beneficial for some pets, using undiluted ACV in your dog's ears can cause pain and irritation.  Proceed with caution and on the advice of your veterinarian.

My Secret Weapon 2 Step Plan for eliminating the majority of your dog's ear problems.

If your dog is suffering from a yeast infection and you've tried other remedies without success, these 3 simple steps might mean the end of her suffering.

Step 1.  First check your dog's food.  If there is corn or grain in the ingredient list, replace it with a quality brand.  I've used Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Lamb & Brown great results.

Diet is your first line of defence for fighting yeast and many common problems like food allergies.  Dogs are carnivores and just don't process grains properly.  Grains can cause inflammation and yes, yeast.

Step 2.

Add a quality probiotic to her diet.  I've had great results with Advanced Probiotic.  One capsule sprinkled over the food twice daily for 2 weeks.

Step 3.

Zymox has the best ear cleaner and treatment for yeast and bacteria I've found in over 30 years of breeding dogs.  Their products are safe and natural and best of all, don't require you to clean your dog's ears (which can create more pain and discomfort).  Fair warning.  They are not inexpensive, but compared to the cost of numerous trips to the veterinarian's office for repeated rounds of creams and steroids, it's a bargain.

From the Zymox product description:

"Highly effective in the management of acute and chronic otitis due to bacterial, fungal and yeast infections. Works without antibiotics. The powerful enzymatic action of patented LP3 Enzyme system naturally cleans and disinfects while destroying even the most resistant microbes. Safe for use on any age of pet. ZYMOX Otic is used in dogs and cats for the treatment of acute and chronic inflammation of the external ear caused by bacterial, viral and yeast infections. Treat once a day for 7 days for acute infection and once a day for 14 days for chronic infection. Do not use in conjunction with other topical ear medications or cleaners."

Over SEVEN THOUSAND 5 Star reviews!  Here's a sample:

"After many expensive vets visits with all kinds of pills and ear drops I tried this and in 3 days her ears were so much better and after 1 week they are 100% great! I am impressed with how fast it worked and my dog loved when I did her ears. The horrible smell is gone and all the head shaking and digging is gone too. My dog and I are very happy. Can't beat the price."

Not all dogs are plagued with ear problems but for those that are, these 3 steps can be life changing.  I hope you'll write and tell me your experience with the products, I love happy endings.
